WOW! The first quarter of this year simply disappeared!

We’ve been busy, and with the nicer weather approaching, we have fun things planned!

Grateful Heart will be partnering with Frontier Communications to highlight local area artists at Gallery Walks and through exhibits in the windows at the Frontier building, 661 Main Street (across from Grateful Heart).

Robin Pickett’s new Children’s Decor line, the “Spotty Collection.” (Hand-stitched, hand-painted … Elephants, Owls, Giraffes and more!)

Our new Botanical Spa Products, formulated by Diane Gee, artisan hand-crafted by new SpaMaster Yogi Yergler

circAfrique and Grateful Heart Gallery are proud to present ALMA Dance featuring world renowned West African Djembefola Yaya Kabo. Performance on Friday, May 17, 6-9pm outside stage at Grateful Heart Gallery, 654 Main St., Lafayette, IN. Workshops are Saturday, May 18, 1:30-3:00pm beginner drum workshop, 3:30 – 5:00pm beginner dance workshop at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 333 Meridian St., West Lafayette, IN. Cost: $15 per workshop, or $25 for both.

Yaya Kabo is an internationally acclaimed drummer from the Casamance province of Senegal, an expert of Malinke rhythms, and one of the world’s foremost djembefolas. He has been the lead djembefola for the National Drum and Dance group of Senegal and the lead djembefola for Chicago’s premiere African drum and dance group Muntu. He is currently serving as the Artistic Director of ALMA since 2007.

Allison Kodeih is the Director of ALMA, a Toledo-based group of professional musicians and dancers bonded in the study, performance and sharing of traditional West African Drum & Dance, Modern Dance, and other World Drum & Dance styles.

Grateful Heart will welcome Latino guest artist Elias Garza this summer.

Diane will be ‘mugging it up‘ with the Greater Lafayette Clay Guild show at Tippecanoe Arts Federation in July.

SEPTEMBER brings our Third Anniversary!

Grateful Heart will welcome Indian guest artist Anindita Dutta this fall.

We are VERY Excited to be co-sponsoring Master African Drummer Bolokada Conde in May, along with band circAfrique and the Purdue Black Cultural Center.

An internationally acclaimed master of Malinke rhythms and a master djembefola, Master Conde will play at Grateful Heart (free!) during Gallery Walk on May 11th, and will offer two workshops on Saturday, May 12th before appearing for one hour on the Main Stage at “Mosey Down Main.”

Backup for Master Conde will be provided by our very own Robin Pickett, her husband Sundeep Rao, and the other members of circAfrique!

For those of you interested in the Workshops …

The workshops will be held:

Saturday, May 12th

at the Purdue Black Cultural Center

1100 Third St. West Lafayette, IN

The Intermediate Class from 10am-2pm

Cost is $15

Enrollees need to know several West African rhythms on djembe and dunun

and be able to play tones and slaps.

The Beginners Class from 2pm-4pm

Cost is $15

No Experience required.

“Fired Light” opens Friday, April 20, 6-9 pm

Join us for an Artist’s reception for the adult students of Grateful Heart master potter Gail Johnston. We’ll have refreshments, and you’ll be able to talk directly with our guest artists.

Gail has challenged her Morton Center students to explore clay and light, and the result is delightful!

Gail, Diane Gee and Robin Pickett will also be contributing complementary pieces of work, on the same theme.

“March’ing” forward to support MS Research

We are looking forward to hosting demonstrations by artist Pam Grimes (sister of our very own Robin Pickett) on March 16th at the gallery, from 4-7 pm.

Pam has lived with Multiple Sclerosis for 20+ years, but has never let it slow her down. In her own words, ” I am not going to just sit here and roll over to it. I’ve got things to do!”

Those things include making dry-embossed cards, to raise money and awareness for MS Research. We hope you can join us on March 16th to meet Pam and join us for some fun and refreshments.

Also, Robin will be debuting her new MS – inspired Art Exhibit. Highlighting the underlying cause of MS, the deterioration of the lining (the Myelin Sheath) surrounding nerves, Robin new series is executed in stretched fabric in hoops, with 3-D patterns and images. Come see how Robin’s unique perspective deals with a very serious subject.

A field of Hearts, Valentines that give TWICE!

We will kick-off our 2nd Annual “Super make-and-take Heart Days this Saturday, February 4 (yes, at the gallery at 654 Main Street), from 11 am – 6 pm.
Half of all Valentine proceeds, plus 10% of all store sales on Saturdays (Feb 4 & 11) will go to support the Lafayette Adult Resource Academy. Prices range from $2 – $20, and you can ‘make and take’ your own, or buy an already finished item.

LARA serves Tippecanoe County and the surrounding area to support Adult Literacy (including GED prep), Job Skills development, and more!

Robin will be helping folks who prefer ‘warm & fuzzy’ to make lovely felted hearts, as pins, barettes, or just ‘warm lovelies!’

Walden Pond Box

This box was sculpted to show the pond surface on the lid — which was started out as a single block of wood 2 inches thick — and the life below the pond’s surface on the side panels of the box itself. Delightful!

Fine Marquetry (Inlaid wood) work by Peter Falk

Marquetry is a complex art-form, in which the artist must break the design down into separate pieces; once the design is drawn on the wood veneers, it is pain-stakingly cut and inset into the veneer which is the background of the piece.

In this Lidded “Wren” box, note the fine detail in the eye of the Wren, and the immaculate alternating strips in the leaf detail — each strip is a separate piece of wood!

This takes years to master, and Peter has done it!

Congratulations to brides-to-be Deanna Morelock, and Kayla Shoaf, both of Lafayette.

They entered and WON our Prize Drawing at the Family Services 2012 Bridal Elegance show.

Deanna will receive a hand-crafted, solid Cherry bread board, by artist Peter Falk.

Kayla will receive a genuine hand-made Pearl necklace and braclet, compliments of ‘pearl-girl’ and artist Diane Gee.
