Featured Work & one theme for 2012
Each year, I sit down and review all of the areas and ideas that are on my (always growing!) ”Someday” list, and I select at least one new technique, and 3-4 themes that I’m going to explore during the year.
While I haven’t made all of my choices yet, I have decided to revisit
MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS — primarily DRUMS!
I simply love combining pottery & music! It is simply, purely FUN!
I created this drum several years ago, and it stands 20 inches high on its stand, is 23″ in diameter, has 35 pounds of clay in the sculpted ‘bell,’ has nearly 70 hand cut & textured petals, is topped with a leather-trimmed glued goatskin head. The first time I fired it, it cleared the walls of my kiln by a scant half-inch!
According to one percussionist who spent nearly an hour tapping, drumming, and testing its sound, this drum can sound like 8 different drums, depending on where & how it is struck. Who knew??
